Thetford to Brandon

Little Ouse from Thetford to Brandon Sunday 20th October

This trip takes you from the town of Thetford and through Thetford forest.  There are 2 weirs to portage around and there could be some trees and branches to duck under/climb over. The river can be shallow in some stretches.   We will stop for lunch after approx 5 miles at the Picnic Site at St Helens. There may be a ripple to play on under the bridge at Santon Downham which is where former GB Slamonist Liz Sharman used to practice (these were the days before we had places such as Holme Pierrepoint and Lee Valley).  After here we enter the small town of Brandon and make our way to the Staunch where we will egress and end our trip.

The total distance is approx. 9 miles.

This is suitable for general purpose kayaks and open canoes (solo or tandem).

It will be an autumn day so dress appropriately for the conditions, with spare clothing just in case, and bring a packed lunch and hot drink.

  • Please meet in time to be ready to start a car shuttle at 9.30am
  • Drivers please add the post codes to your sat navs or familiarise yourselves with the route for the car shuttle as it may not be impossible to form in a convoy through the streets of Thetford. The car shuttle is 16 miles there and back which could take upto 45 minutes.
  • If you can car share with others from your Club that would be great as this reduces the cars we need to shuttle
  • There should be a public toilet a few minutes walk in the bus station

  • Brandon Staunch, Brandon. Post Code for leisure centre IP27 0JB (20 Church Road).
  • We will leave the cars by the leisure centre and then walk up and drive the cars down to the river at the end of trip to collect boats and load up.  There is a barrier between the sports centre and the drive down to the river which should be open but we don’t want to chance it.
  • Bring trolley’s if you have one just in case.
