Two Mile Bottom to Hockwold cum Wilton

NOTE: The Start and End Detail of this Trip have Changed due to Trees Across the River at Thetford

Little Ouse from Two Mile Bottom (Scout Campsite) to Hockwold cum Wilton Sunday 20th October

This trip takes you from heart of Thetford forest through to Brandon and onto Hockwold cum Wilton. There is one sluice to portage at Brandon and there could be some trees and branches to navigate round/duck under/climb over. Bring a knife for cutting tree branches if you have one!

The river can be shallow in some stretches but with the recent rain we are expecting a bit of flow. The total distance is approx. 9 miles.

This is suitable for general purpose kayaks and open canoes (solo or tandem).

It will be an autumn day so dress appropriately for the conditions, with spare clothing just in case, and bring a packed lunch and hot drink.

Revised Start

We will now be starting at the Two-Mile Bottom Scout Campsite which is off the A134 between Thetford and Munford

Important Information!

  • If your vehicle with boats is over 2.10m you will need to gain access via the Power Station entrance next door. There will be a buzzer to gain access, just state you are going to the Scout centre (it is normal practice for tall vehicles to use their entrance). Head to the right and there should be a track and a gate which takes you to the Scout centre. If it looks tricky, we will arrange for someone to wave you in the right direction.
  • If you are confident you are under 2.10m then use the entrance sign posted Guide and Scout entrance and head under the tunnel.
  • Park up by the containers where the centre store their boats and we will unload and sort ourselves out from there.
  • Please meet in time to be ready to start a car shuttle at 9.30am
  • The drive to the get out is approx. 17 minutes.
  • If you can car share with others from your Club that would be great as this reduces the cars we need to shuttle.

Revised End

  • To keep the original journey distance of approx. miles we will continue past Brandon Staunch and end at Hockwold cum Wilton (see map)
  • There is a common at the end of Church Lane off the Main Street off the A1065. I don’t have an exact post code for this, but the nearest point of interest would be the pub IP26 4NB
  • Bring a trolley if you have one just in case.
